Wednesday Word: Blank

•

Today is one of those days. I’ve spent five hours off and on coming back to this page to write and nothing has been produced.

I’ve agonized awhile, and finally, just a little bit ago before hitting “publish,” I decided: it’s okay.

It’s okay to have moments where the mind is blank. It’s okay to acknowledge that I feel a little wrung out and need to refill so that I can continue on. It’s okay to sit with my feelings and acknowledge that they are human and natural.

So instead of anything terribly profound today, I’ll share with you what I’m doing while observing the season of Lent. I’m reading two books:

We always need more wisdom, right? I feel like that’s never something we have enough of, so I’m seeking daily to find more of God’s wisdom and to apply it to my life. I’m also seeking to deepen my desire to spend time with the scriptures every day.

What have I given up for Lent? Doom-scrolling on social media. I’m trying instead to read more and be more present with those around me. It’s easy to want to escape the world by burying your face in a screen and enjoying the nonsense of other people online, but in the past, it has left my heart feeling drier and less peaceful.

I’m hoping this season of intentional distance from some things and intentional proximity to the Word will help renew and refill me. It’s okay to have seasons like this. Even the ground needs a rest between growing seasons to recover. There is a season for everything (Ecclesiastes 3) and that includes seasons that feel blank and empty.

Like the tide, creativity ebbs and flows. Blank seasons can foster hunger and drive to work harder when seasons of fullness come around. The balance keeps us moving forward, resting when we need to rest (remember, God rested after creating the world (Genesis 1)) and following the drive when the wheels get moving once again.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s not really worth it. Instead, rest in the space provided and lean into what makes you feel refilled.

Be patient. Breakthrough will come soon enough.

Blessings,

~Lynne
