I’ve been sitting here staring at this blank blog page for awhile now today. This morning was an insane flurry of activity and stress, which has left my brain fried and feeling “crashed out,” as my students like to say.
It’s a week of grasping at straws with writing, where there are good things going on but I can’t write about them yet for one reason or another, so I have to pick something else. As I sit here, coming down from the pressure of the morning, one word crossed my mind to describe how I’m feeling: decrescendo.
This is a musical term that means “a decrease in loudness in a piece of music” (Oxford dictionary). For my noise-sensitive ears, I feel it as a release of the pressure that’s been straining against my hearing. It also feels a little like the tide going out, like letting out a breath you’ve been holding.

In the space created by this decrescendo, this scripture filled the void in my mind: “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” (Psalm 23:1-3 NIV)
After a bout with insanity, my soul is in need of some restoration. I need to lean into this space left by the decrescendo and enjoy the green pastures and still waters that the Lord leads me to.
I bet you do too.

We need times of de-escalation and decrescendo. We need to come off the pressure of constant stress and calm ourselves down. It’s good for our hearts, minds, and souls.
I just wanted to remind you–and myself–to not fill that space with other junk. You’ll be thankful you didn’t. Instead, seek His green pastures and drink the still waters, where you’ll discover restoration for your weary soul.
Blessings,
~Lynne
