Wednesday Word: God Sees Purpose in Our Mess

•

Do you ever feel like a tangle of messy wires?

I’m helping my husband with his business this summer and recently I’ve helped him wire some refurbished parts. The image above is some of the leftover pieces, wound up in a ball and set aside.

Sometimes I feel like I have been balled up and left set aside. And not just my leftovers either!

The good news for us is that God doesn’t see us that way! His Word assures us in several places with imagery about cords and purpose:

  • Psalms 139:13-14 (NIV):  “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

God has made us with tender care. To Him, our tangles are not tangles at all but rather a work of art. Maybe we can’t see it, but we know from other things that His work is truly wonderful. The challenge is seeing ourselves as valuable and wonderfully made. God doesn’t make mistakes. You may feel like a mess, but let me assure you, you are no accident. God made you for Himself, and He loves you!

  • Ephesians 2:10 NIV:  “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

We are also made with purpose! Just as wire can be threaded and bent to serve a purpose, so we too are also made for a divine reason. In our limited vision, we can’t see the end design. You may not even be wire, but rather thread, or yarn, or rope–yet still designed for a purpose to do good works. God sees the bigger picture at all times. You are not a leftover tangle of mess. You are not random. You are made divinely and your life has purpose! Look to God first–He will show you the purpose of your life, step by step.

  • Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV): “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

This verse shows us the value of community, of not being alone in the world. It’s often used at weddings to symbolize the two braiding together with the Holy Spirit as the third to create a stronger cord. Part of our God-designed purpose is to be in community, to be intertwined with others so that we are stronger and more capable of fulfilling our purpose. Thin threads are spun together to create stronger yarn. So too we need to be with other believers, to be encouraged by their stories and what God is doing in their lives. Lean into your community and you will find your mess begins to unravel and purpose comes forth. (Don’t have a community? Don’t give up! I’ve recently decided to build my own, so look at those around you and see what God may be nudging you to do about them. They may need community as much as you do.)

Friends, I hope this encourages you today that what you see right now as a mess is not your endgame. You don’t have to stay there balled up, in stagnation, feeling forgotten. God is as close as the air you breathe–remember, it’s His Spirit dwelling inside you. You are a holy temple, and you have help. Stop looking at the mess and look up. He loves you, and longs to see purpose unfold in your life. With His help, you will find transformation from mess to purpose.

Blessings,

~Lynne
