Wednesday Word: Is Jesus in Your Toolbox?

•

This week I was reorganizing my son’s toys, mainly to periodically make sure that all the little bits and pieces were accounted for. As I emptied out his toolbox and removed all the tractors and tiny ducks that don’t belong there, I came across this at the bottom:

The other week, I wrote about things my husband looked at and remarked, “There’s a sermon in that.” Seeing this tiny figurine of Jesus at the bottom of the toolbox made me laugh, and then make me think, “There’s a sermon in that!”

That sermon would have this title:  “Is Jesus In Your Toolbox?”

As Christians, we’re all guilty of speaking Jesus but walking as if we have to carry everything in our own power. We pray and ask for help and healing, but we live as if it’s up to us to fix our problems.

It’s really not up to us. We have a tool in our toolbox that we should not treat as a secret:  Jesus.

Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV)

His invitation was not just for the crowd that He spoke to then. It’s an invitation that stands true today! He is able to lighten our load and help us!

Elsewhere, the Bible says:

“Come near to God and He will come near to you.” (James 4:8 NIV)

and

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV)

The hope and power of Jesus is not a secret tool to be hidden away at the top of the toolbox for emergencies. Instead, He should be at the very top, right within reach. He should be the first thing we reach for, and the one that we believe will fix EVERY problem that we encounter. Matthew 19:26 (NIV) says, “With man, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.”

Nothing is out of His power, friends. Reach for Him first, and believe that His power is as long and wide and high and deep as His love (Ephesians 3:18).

Blessings,

~Lynne
