I recently was able to get back into the kitchen and do some fall baking! It felt really good to be back to doing something I love, even though it does take a lot of energy for me right now.
I made an apple crisp one day, and another I roasted, mashed, and pureed pumpkin and made pumpkin chocolate chip bread.

In order to do these things, I used recipes and instructions that I found on the internet. While I know that not everything you find on the internet is 100% accurate and safe, nor should it be believed without question, I’ve had more hits than misses when it comes to benefiting from the kitchen wisdom of others. This is not to say that my mother taught me nothing about baking or cooking, but a lot of what I’ve tried as an adult in the kitchen has been teaching myself by following online instructions and recipes.
Like roasting pumpkin pieces and mashing and pureeing it! I confess I’ve always used canned pumpkin and now I know how to make my own.
Benefiting from the wisdom of others isn’t just limited to the kitchen, though. By listening and discerning, it’s possible to benefit from the life wisdom of people in your life.
While sometimes people can be like the internet in that you can’t believe everything you hear or see from them, there are genuinely wise people out there who can make our lives richer by knowing them, listening to them, and walking with them–even if it’s just for a short while.
- Proverbs 13:20 NIV: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
The company you keep matters. Who you listen to and let speak into your life matters. And it’s up to you if you walk with the wise or suffer the harm of fools. God will equip you with discernment from Him to be able to tell who you allow to be a voice in your life and who should not be allowed that privilege.
God sets us up with people in our lives to help us, just like I have benefited from the kitchen wisdom I’ve found online. True wisdom is a gift, not unlike a good recipe that can be used again and again for the benefit and enjoyment of others. Ask God to show you who to lean into for wisdom, and watch your life become richer as you grow in wisdom.
Blessings,
~Lynne
