On the way home from the grocery store last night, the sky was orange and red and just beautiful at sunset. My son spoke up from the backseat, “Mommy, look at the pretty sky!”
I smiled and told him that Jesus was telling us how much He loves us. My son replied, “But Mommy, Jesus is in heaven, and we can’t hear Him!”
I replied, “You’re right, buddy, Jesus IS in heaven. He hears us when we pray, but He also speaks back to us, just in ways that are different from what you might think. Maybe we can’t hear spoken words, but a beautiful sunset like this is actually a love letter for us from Jesus, telling us how much He loves us.”
He uttered an enlightened four-year-old “Ohhhh,” and sat back to enjoy the ride home.

As we drove in quiet awe, I felt my heart being gently tugged. How often do I miss little love letters like this that are sprinkled across my path? I see plenty of them, but sometimes my mind churns with distractions and I miss out on truly enjoying them.
The world around us carries the fingerprints of God, since He Himself made the skies, the land, the trees, the animals, and the sun and stars. He set them in motion to give us light, warmth, food, seasonal heralds, and beauty, so much beauty to simply enjoy. He created our eyes to feast on the wonders around us that He created, because each of those wonders points to something bigger than ourselves–a loving Creator who made many of these things just for our enjoyment.

I love fall because the trees turn colors, and the sunrises and sunsets seem sharper because the skies are clearer in the cool temperatures. There is an endless bounty to feast my eyes and senses on. And, as I told my son, these wondrous things are ways that God speaks to us–not in words (though I do believe in the “still small voice of God”), but through His creation:
The heavens are telling the glory of God;
And the expanse [of heaven] is declaring the work of His hands. [Rom 1:20, 21]
Day after day pours forth speech,
And night after night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are they [spoken] words [from the stars];
Their voice is not heard.
Yet their voice [in quiet evidence] has gone out through all the earth,
Their words to the end of the world.
~Psalm 19:1-4 AMP
We are not forsaken orphans here on this earth without a word from our Creator. He communicates regularly through the Bible–the ultimate love letter–and through creation, reminding us gently of His love, giving us reasons to praise His glorious name.

Every day, He drops love letters on your path. You just have to open your eyes and look for them. I pray that today you would slow down just enough to look for a love letter from our Maker.
Blessings,
~Lynne
