It’s back to school season! New notebooks, pens, shiny waxed floors, all the wonderful things about a fresh year unfolding. For me, maternity leave is over and I’m easing back into old routines with a new twist on things.
Learning should never stop in life, and this morning was a huge lesson for me. I was almost late because of a series of events and the lesson learned was this: suck it up and stay up.
At a certain point in the morning, I’m going to need to just stay awake and stay out of bed. Take this morning as an example.
My baby boy had a great night’s sleep. He slept for almost 9 hours straight (yay, we seem to have gotten past the 4 month sleep regression!! Read more about that here), which means I slept for about 6 uninterrupted hours before I woke up. So I got up at 4:30 to pump and went back to bed because he was still asleep… of course he woke up about 10 minutes after I laid back down, so I got up again. Here the mistake was made: I should have just stayed up at that point instead of setting an alarm, which of course I turned off and dozed back off, making me nearly late this morning.
It’s absolutely not my favorite thing to think about getting up at 4:30 and starting my day at that time. That’s not my cup of tea. But it may have to be my cup of coffee for the rest of my boy’s first year, or at least until he stops needing a night feed.
Lessons learned. If this happens again, I guess my day just starts at 4:30am. It’s only for a season. Eventually, nights will get back to normal sleep. Ecclesiastes 3 doesn’t say “there’s a time to sleep and a time to stay up anyway” but it should be in there! But I should always learn from my mistakes, and since rushing makes for an unpleasant stressful morning, I’ll just need to find something to do with my new awake hours when they come!
I’m gaining a little more wisdom every day. Proverbs is full of emphasis on gaining wisdom, so yes, learning should be a life-long pursuit! And it isn’t dependent on being in school or not. Some lessons come the hard way, some aren’t as bad, but you should never stop learning and pursuing wisdom.
- Proverbs 4:5a: “Get wisdom, get understanding…” (NIV)
- Proverbs 4:7: “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost you all you have, get understanding” (NIV)
Keep learning, friends.
Blessings,
~Lynne
