Wednesday Word: Seasoned with Salt AND Vanilla

•

Colossians 4:6 (NIV) says, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

In Matthew 5:13 (NIV), Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth.”

Now among other things I do, I’m a baker. And yesterday, I made a delightful chocolate cake that was topped with a cup of peanut butter and a divine chocolate ganache:

As I measured out ingredients, I noticed that almost every part of every recipe that I bake has vanilla extract and a little salt–even the sweetest, most decadent recipes.

By themselves, salt and vanilla aren’t really good to just have a spoonful of. And you might even think that a sweet, indulgent recipe wouldn’t need salt in it, nor would a chocolate (or any other flavor) recipe need any vanilla. But those two ingredients enhance the other flavors, making them even better.

On the surface, someone’s life might seem just fine without Jesus. It can look like a beautifully iced dessert that appears flawless to the eye. But if you take a closer look below the surface, you’ll see that something is missing.

Psalm 34:8 (NIV) invites us to “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”

Salt and vanilla are used to bring out the best flavors in a recipe. Not unlike those ingredients, Jesus brings out the best flavors in our lives and makes us become the best version of ourselves.

God invites us to taste His goodness for ourselves. I pray if you don’t know Him personally today, that you would take a chance and invite Him in to taste His goodness for yourself. I’m praying for you.

Blessings from the kitchen,

~Lynne
