Wednesday Word: The Peace of Advent

•

(Part 4 of my Advent Children’s Story at Beaver Creek Church for the month of December. This is written for our small humans, but even adults can be blessed through simple stories. Enjoy!)

So far this month, we have journeyed through hope, joy, and love. Today we are going to talk about what? Peace! That’s right!

What is peace? If the words are a little hard to come by, tell me something that makes you feel peaceful inside.

So I’m an introvert, and in so many words what that means is that in order to feel recharged and energized, I need time alone. And not just any time alone, but quiet time.

Now let’s be honest:  have your mom and dad ever told you to be quiet? Or maybe a teacher or other adult? Mmhmm, I bet they have! My own mother has told me to be quiet plenty of times in my life, I’m sure!

Did you know that our Father God invites us to be quiet before Him?

  • Psalm 46:10 says “Be still and know that I am God.” (NIV)
  • Exodus 14:14 says, “The LORD will fight for you, you need only be still.” (NIV)
  • Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him” (NIV)
  • And Isaiah 32:17 says, “The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever.” (NIV)

The world around us is really noisy, isn’t it? Music blasts loudly; people are in a big hurry almost all the time, especially this time of year. But the invitation from God is the exact opposite of how the world is going. God invites us to be still and remember that He is in charge of everything, to let go and sit quietly with Him.

The song I want to share today is a song that I discovered this summer during a Bible study and it really helped me find focus when the world gets too loud and I feel noisy inside. It’s by Elevation Rhythm and it’s simply called “Quiet.”

God invites us to be quiet, to be still and find peace in His presence.  Author and pastor David Jeremiah wrote, “When God cannot be found in the midst of the frenzy, silence and stillness are needed to hear Him–so that His children may know He is present and has a plan for the future.” (Jeremiah Study Bible p732)

There is nothing wrong with having things to do, and much we are called to do as service to God is physical work, like helping, building, buying, giving, and more. But God also wants us to just spend time with Him, in stillness and peace. The best way to get to know someone is to spend time sitting with them and talking to them. That is what God wants us to do:  spend time quietly getting to know Him. Knowing Him leads to loving Him more, and then that love will spill out to others.

The world notices people who have peace inside them. This week, I challenge you to seek some peaceful quiet time with God. Tell Him what you’re thinking and feeling. He loves you and wants you to talk to Him.

Peace be upon you, my friends.  I’ll see you next week!

Blessings,
