Wednesday Word: There’s a Sermon in That

•

“There’s a sermon in that.”

My husband said this not once but several times during our recent trip.

We have been away for a few days for our first family vacation that was truly 100% a vacation. We traveled to the Northern Neck of Virginia and spent 4 days visiting my husband’s family and enjoying the river.

Now I say what I said about it truly being a vacation not as a complaint but as a fact that many of our trips in 9.5 years of marriage have been built around something specific to either an event or my husband’s then side-hustle now full time job. We did some really amazing things on those trips and I love traveling with him, but many of those trips covered a large amount of territory in a short amount of time.

This trip spent time focusing on family and slowing down. Yesterday we spent hours at the little water park where we stayed and played with our son and swam in the pool. We had no time table or agenda and it was amazing.

As I do, I take a lot of photos to document these trips. And some of these moments, as i’m photographing and he’s looking on, he made that remark:  “There’s a sermon in that.”

I looked at him once and said, “Okay, what is it?”

Of course he just smiled and said, “You’ll figure it out.”

I realized as I looked at some of the photos I took that it resonates deeply within me, yes, there is likely a sermon in that. Some of them might take awhile to actually put the correct words to explain them on paper, but God is speaking to us through ordinary moments all the time. Everyday moments are the platform through which God ministers to us.

Psalm 8:3-4 (NIV) says, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?”

We are so small when compared to the vastness of the sea or the ramparts of heaven. Yet He still sets all these amazing things in motion just for us to enjoy and care for. How many times do we overlook His messages?

Sometimes we just have to slow down enough to understand that He’s speaking to us and trying to teach us. When we do, I guarantee:  you’ll find a sermon in that.

Blessings,

~Lynne
