Wednesday Word: Your Assignment This Year

•

We are a whole week and a day into 2025! How’s it going for you? If you made a resolution, are you sticking with it? Or have you abandoned ship?

This space is not meant to shame you whatsoever. In fact, I was reminded of a scripture that I think will encourage us all, especially if you’re struggling a week into the new year.

2 Timothy 1:6 reminds us to “Stir up the gift of God which is in you.”

You and I have potential stored inside us that is waiting to be tapped. It’s there, given to us by the Holy Spirit when we accepted Jesus as Lord of our lives, but we have to do our part to stir it up, to fan the flame so it will burn brighter and warmer.

The Christian walk is not meant to be a passive life. Just as the verb “walk” is an active verb, so too our lives must have action. God will work through us, but He asks to partner with us, not do all the work Himself.

2025 is full of raw potential as well. Since January 1st, I have seen this verse showing up in a lot of places. I know I shared it last week, but it’s so good that I’m going to add it in again:

If we will partner with Him and fan our flames, God is going to do a new thing this year. I don’t know about you, but I’m really longing to see something new–in my life, in my spiritual journey, and in the Church as a whole.

In order to see this, we must do our part. How can you stir up your gifts this year? Are you feeling a nudge toward something but have been ignoring it because it doesn’t feel safe? Maybe it’s time to break with the ruts we’re stuck in and try a new path. Maybe we need to forge our own path and create something new. There is no one-size-fits-all answer for what we are being offered, but we have the guarantee that, even if your path and mine look completely different, we are both still divinely guided if we listen. Isaiah 30:21 (NIV) says, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

Friends, don’t just make a resolution this year. Fan the flames; stir up the gifts you carry within you and see what they grow into. Choose to accept God’s assignment this year in place of a resolution. Don’t be afraid; rather, walk in the confidence that God will finish the work He longs to start in you. All you have to do is say “yes” and accept His assignment. He will guide you straight and true.

Blessings,

~Lynne
